University of Madrid chooses CLEANSORB Dry Bed Absorber for III-V Photovoltaic Research

The University of Madrid has selected CS CLEAN SYSTEMS to deliver a CLEANSORB dry scrubber for its Aixtron AIX 200/4 MOCVD reactor. The CS195SC single column system, which includes several sophisticated safety features for the MOVPE application , is used to abate the toxic and flammable gases AsH3 and PH3 used in the epitaxial growth of III-V concentrator solar cells.

GaAs based multijunction devices are the most efficient solar cells to date, with record highs of over 40 % reported for controlled laboratory conditions. Originally developed for “high-end” space exploration and satellite applications, they are increasingly being deployed in terrestrial concentrator modules on account of their superior performance. The ability of compound photovoltaic cells to absorb light over a wide area of the solar spectrum owes to their multiple bandgap structure The thin films required to define the energy bandgaps of the solar cell are epitaxially grown, usually on germanium substrate wafers, by means of MOVPE.

MOVPE (MOCVD) poses a critical challenge in terms of exhaust gas management. The combination of liter per minute-range flows of the toxic hydrides arsine and phosphine (AsH3 and PH3), the pyrophoric metalorganic precursors of gallium, indium, as well as the predominance of hydrogen as the carrier gas, place high demands on safety of operation and handling.

The potential advantages of Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) solar cells have been widely reported, and this very promising technology has already found its way into mainstream manufacturing. The technology used to apply CIGS thin films to various substrates differs significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer, with each having its own technical merits. However, common to nearly all methods of producing the CIGS material regime is a selenization and/ or sulfurization step in which the gases hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen selenide are used as the precursors of sulphur and selenium respectively.

The toxic hazards and accidents arising from the gas Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) are well known from its use and handling in the mature petroleum and chemical industries. Hydrogen selenide (H2Se) is an extremely poisonous substance with a TWA TLV of 0.05 ppm and IDLH = 1 ppm. The toxic nature of the gases hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen selenide, and also the high total volumetric flowrates from solar panel manufacturing place high demands on the safe waste gas treatment of CIGS processes. In addition to the abatement of the exhaust gases themselves, safeguards to protect against the emergency release of H2S and H2Se from gas cylinders to the factory neighbourhood is also strongly advisable in view of the toxic potential.

CS CLEAN SYSTEMS AG signs a Distribution Agreement for Taiwan (ROC) with Zillion Tek Co. Ltd.

CS CLEAN SYSTEMS AG and ICS Technology Co. Ltd., have jointly decided to terminate their mutual business agreement.

Commencing from September 1st, 2007 CS CLEAN SYSTEMS AG has appointed Zillion Tek Co., Ltd. as the sales and service representative within the Taiwanese market.
